One hawker dish that we never fail to turn to when we are hankering for something hearty is a wholesome bowl of lor mee which is rich, viscous and oh-so-comforting.
While there aren’t as many great lor mee stalls in Singapore, you have to try Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee at Hainanese Village Centre.
This popular stall has been around for over two decades, which is a testament to how well-loved their lor mee is even after so many years.
Be prepared for snaking long queues, especially during lunchtime. Their opening hours are usually from 11am to 3.30pm daily but they close up the shop early when they’ve sold out for the day.
A basic bowl of Lor Mee here costs just S$3.50 and if you’re feeling a little more peckish, you can opt to have an upsized bowl for S$4. However, we feel that a S$3.50 bowl is sufficient as it comes brimming with plenty of ingredients and a generous serving of noodles.
Choose your favourite type of noodles from their selection of yellow flat noodles, bee hoon and thick bee hoon. We love how the noodles soaked up all the essence of the thick, viscous braising gravy, giving the noodles a robust flavour that was hard to resist.
Each bowl of lor me comes loaded with a variety of ingredients that give the entire dish plenty of varying texture. We love how there was slivers of ngoh hiang scattered all over the dish as well as chunks of tender braised duck meat. Unlike many other lor mee stalls out there, Lorong Ah Soo Lor Mee is very generous with their ingredients so every bite is peppered with something new to chew on.
If you want to jazz up your lor mee, you can also help yourself to the condiments at the front of the stall. These include minced garlic, vinegar, spring onions and chilli padi. We feel that adding a little garlic and chilli padi works wonders and helps to enhance the flavours of the lor mee.
