Have you ever seen gold leaf wrapped ice cream on Instagram or Facebook before? This brilliant idea originated from Kinkakuji, Japan, and it is basically the #nextlevel ice cream that you need to have for yourself.

The idea is simple; a classic ice cream cone is wrapped in a thin year gold leaf. Yes, it may seem a tad ridiculous to put gold on ice cream, but the trend has received much love on various social media platforms and many would include this as a must have when they visit Japan.

Thankfully, you need not spend money on securing a plane ride to Japan because Small Potatoes Ice Creamery has brought this Instagram-worthy dessert to you right at home. Albeit a limited edition creation at present, would this dessert be worth your time (and money?) Read on to find out more.

Small Potatoes Ice Creamery serves up healthy soft-serve and makes their ice cream fresh on a daily basis. They also claim to use high-quality ingredients such as Okinawa Purple Potatoes and Hokkaido 3.6 Fresh Milk and do not use any additives or sugar syrup in their ice cream.

But of course, we got what we came for and that is the Sea Salt Caramel with Gold Leaf (S$12) soft serve. At first instance, S$12 does seem a steep price for a soft serve, but the fact that their 24-carat gold leaves are imported all the way from Japan should justify the price point right?

Unfortunately for us, we found it difficult to appreciate the dessert in terms of its taste but nonetheless, yes, it was a pretty sight to look at. The gold leaf practically added no value in flavour, other than aesthetically, and if you are not careful enough, you would finish the whole sheet in an instant.

In fact, the element of the dessert that had the strongest taste was the sea salt caramel ice cream. But even in this case, we could hardly taste any caramel and the amount of salt in the ice cream was rather overwhelming.

Another flavour which Small Potatoes Ice Creamery offers is the Purple Potato with Silver Leaf (S$10), a slightly more affordable option and interesting spin on their classic Purple Potato flavour.

So, is the Sea Salt Caramel with Gold Leaf (S$12) worth the price and the hype? For the gram, definitely. Otherwise, we would think twice.
