The combination of any kind of roasted meat and rice is one of those go-to meals we look for when we want an unpretentious yet satisfying meal. At Alexandra Village Food Centre, one of the star stalls that dishes out roasted meats is Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies.

Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies is popular for their black sauce that blankets the roasted meats. While black is not the most appealing colour for food, this stall sees endless queues during peak periods!

We ordered a plate of the classic roasted meat pairing of Char Shao Shao Rou 叉烧烧肉饭 (S$4) and our meats came drenched in their signature black sauce – we could barely see anything under all that dark sauce! It’s made from fermented bean paste and molasses, which probably explains the dark colour. But one thing’s for sure is that Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies does not scrimp on their sauces.

Both the char shao and shao rou had great texture as well as meat-to-fat ratio, and we particularly enjoyed the crispy skin of the shao rou. Although the sweet sauce was addictive and went well with the roasted meats, we could not really taste the smoky flavour of the meats – perhaps it was masked by the sauce.

Nonetheless, lovers of roasted meats should definitely check Lau Phua Chay Authentic Roasted Delicacies out for good roasted meats and an addictive black sauce!
