8 Hawker Stalls In Singapore Helmed By Ex-Hotel and Restaurant Chefs

Hawker Stalls Opened By Ex Chefs Collage

Hawker culture plays a significant role in forming Singapore’s culinary landscape and, truth be told, is where one can find some of the best—and we mean best—versions of Singapore food out there, and at an affordable price too.

As of late, many renowned chefs, especially seasoned ones who spent many decades of their career working in some of the finest restaurants around, have taken their passions and skill to hawker centres. Possibly because they want full credit and deciding power over what they choose to serve? Or possibly because they want their food to appeal to a much wider spectrum of Singaporeans—we’ll never know for sure.

But what we do know is that their food is stellar, expertly prepared and will not cost an arm nor a leg to enjoy.

A Noodle Story Singapore Noodles

A NOODLE STORY

A Noodle Story is quite possibly one of the best-known hawker ramen stalls in Singapore. Founded by two chefs—Gwern Khoo and Ben Tham, who both earned their culinary chops working at fine dining institutions of the likes of Waku Ghin, Iggy’s, Jaan par Andre, and St Pierre, their noodles have earned them a spot in the Bib Gourmand list of Singapore’s Michelin Guide since 2016.
For S$8, you get noodles that are seasoned with imported dried shrimps and kelp, a USA-patented pasteurized egg, 36-hour slow-braised cha shu and more! And if that isn’t enough, opt for their larger option which goes for just S$11.

Burgs Burger

BURGS BY PROJECT WARUNG

Many of us would be familiar with Burgs—a humble halal burger stall that first started out in a corner of Golden Mile Food Complex. Founded by 3 young hawkerpreneurs who were all previously restaurant chefs at highly reputable restaurants in Singapore and Dubai, they whip up gourmet burgers at incredibly affordable prices.

The classic burger (S$4.90) features an amazingly juicy and succulent beef patty sandwiched between 2 toasted buns and if that is not enough, opt for the Double (S$7.40) which comes with 2 of such! Double the portion, double the joy, right?

LITTLE BOWL SINGAPORE

Let’s be honest—how often do we come across decadent French fare under S$10? Especially in the CBD area, to find a satisfying meal that is pocket-friendly is a feat on its own.
Founded by 3 chefs who used to work at Saveur, Little Bowl Singapore looks just like another ordinary food stall in NTUC Foodfare but what they serve is amazing French food at affordable price points. The prices for a serving of pasta start from just S$5.90!

Helmed by an ex-pastry chef from Mandarin Orchard, this stall at Berseh Food Centre specialises in sweet treats and bakes.
If you are a fan of desserts but aren’t keen on spending close to S$10 on some simple indulgence, then Muffles is the perfect place for you. Their traditional egg tarts (S$1.20), apple crumble (S$3) and signature brownies (S$2.50) may appear unassuming but boy, are they delicious!

Shi Xiang Ge Noodles

SHI XIANG GE

Conveniently located just a minute away from Bishan interchange, Shi Xiang Ge is an unpretentious noodle stall opened by an ex-Crystal Jade La Mian Director. They specialise in handmade noodles and a myriad of Sichuan-style dishes and while their menu is kept fairly simple, the dishes are one that will leave a lasting impression.

The classic Beef La Mian (S$5) is the crowd-favourite and one that will never go wrong. Otherwise, the Hot & Spicy Intestine Noodles (S$5) will be an equally tantalising choice, especially for those who enjoy spicy flavours.
