Everyone knows that ABC Brickworks Food Centre is home to a plethora of seriously good local hawker fare. Located right at the back of the hawker centre is Wow Wow West which serves up old-school Western food.
Popular for its reasonable prices and generous portions, this stall supports the Yellow Ribbon Project by hiring ex-convicts as well. Wow Wow West pulls in a crowd at any time of the day, so do come early or be prepared to wait. But rest assured, the wait will be worth it.
First up was the Fish & Chips (S$8) with a Chicken Cheese Sausage (S$2) as an add on. We were impressed by the massive piece of fish that took up at least half the plate! The batter layer was thin and gave a good crunch against the incredibly moist and flaky fish that glistened when we cut it open.
Wow Wow West’s Fish & Chips featured a generous dollop of their homemade tartar sauce that was not your usual white-coloured condiment, but it was slightly pinkish instead. The herbs and tanginess of the sauce went extremely well with smooth fish.
The Chicken Cheese Sausage was a popular add-on option, and we can totally understand why. One bite in, the sausage was juicy and we loved the cheese that oozed out. Simple but oh-so-satisfying, this is a must-try!
We also had the massive Chicken Chop (S$7). The meat itself was juicy, succulent and well-seasoned. We loved that the chicken skin was crispy and slightly charred which gave the chicken a smoky taste. However, we felt that the gravy was a tad bland and did little to the dish.
All the dishes were served with fries, baked beans and coleslaw on the side. Although the fries and baked beans were nothing to rave about, the refreshing coleslaw was perfect when the proteins got too heavy for us.
One portion here is easily enough for two small eaters and certainly filling for a famished person. Wow Wow West is definitely one place where you can get a bang for your buck with its huge portions!
