Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao – Cheap and Good Xiao Long Baos That are Worth the Wait

Long gone are the days where we can only satisfy our xiao long bao cravings at restaurants. Now we can get really good and not to mention, authentic xiao long baos at hawker centres and coffee shops, and at a fraction of the price we would usually have to pay too!

Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao at Alexandra Village Food Centre is one of those places. Serving up a selection of authentic and affordable Shanghainese dumplings and noodles, it’s no wonder the queue for this stall is endless.

We are glad to say that the Steamed Mini Buns 小笼包 (S$5 for 7pcs) were worth standing in the queue for. Steamed fresh to order, each morsel was a burst of soupy goodness encased in a handmade skin that had a good chew. While the xiao long baos were not as uniform as those you would get at restaurants, we weren’t complaining for the price.

Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao offers a few noodle dishes but we got the La Mian with Fried Bean Sauce 炸酱面 (S$3.50) to try. The springy hand-pulled noodles were covered in a sweet meat sauce and topped with sliced cucumbers that gave a textural crunch. After a good mix, we could really see how generous the portion was!
