Many would think that Sembawang Hills Food Centre is located in, well, Sembawang. However, it is instead tucked away along a random and relatively underrated corner of Upper Thomson. But despite it being small in size, you’d be surprised to know that this hawker centre houses plenty of hidden food gems that are worth trying.

One such gem is Seng Huat Duck Rice. For braised duck that packs a massive flavour punch, you really do need to pay this humble duck rice stall in Upper Thomson a visit. Crowds form up from as early as 10.30am for lunch and for good reason—quality and affordability. Their Duck Rice Set, which features a plate of rice, soup and a monster portion of braised duck only cost us S$4.50!

Their duck rice is so popular that they usually sell out by lunchtime, so we were glad that we came early enough to be able to grab a plate of this goodness. Just from the picture itself, you can see the long snaking queue that we had to tackle just to get ourselves some of their acclaimed duck rice.

For just S$3.50, you can get yourself a plate generously laden with tender slices of duck coated in a copious amount of sauce. The braising sauce was light and savoury with hints of cinnamon and star anise, which really complemented the duck meat as well as mask the natural gaminess of it.

The rice was surprisingly very light and fluffy, which was just the perfect vessel to soak up all the luscious sauce with. The dish also came with a bowl of piping hot, dark soup that had a slightly herbal taste to it. It definitely added more depth and flavour when eaten together with the duck and rice.

It is hard to find such tender, well-cooked duck in Singapore, and if you’re craving for some solid duck, you definitely should check out Seng Huat Duck Rice for a quacking good time.
