Life Lessons We Learnt From Playing Pokémon Go

Playing Pokemon Go

Pokémon Go taken over Singapore over the weekend. After the official Pokémon Go page made their announcement on Facebook, people in Singapore have been hooked. Suddenly, everyone is out – in shopping malls, at playgrounds, in neighbourhoods they never thought they would go to…

The game takes players into the actual world of Pokémon, where you can walk along the streets of your neighbourhood and come across a random Weedle.

The fact that you can catch these monsters and make them battle against other players is probably what motivates all of us. But after playing the game for the weekend, we’ve got quite a couple of take-aways – life lessons if you may – that we might have taken for granted otherwise.

Here are the Life Lessons We Learnt From Playing Pokémon Go.

#1. The Early Bird Catches The Worm

Because in this game, the earliest Pokémon master catches the pokémon. If you see a good pokémon on the streets, chances are that the fastest one in the vicinity gets it.

As with life, we need to have a sense of urgency so as to accomplish something.

#2. Time Stands Still For No Man

If you sit on something, you might miss the chance of a lifetime. In Pokémon Go, sit around and you will lose the chance to catch a rare pokémon.

#3. Always Look Left And Right Before You Cross The Road

Safety is still key, kids! Do not ever forget this – whether you are playing Pokémon Go or not. Sometimes, we get too cooped up in the game that we forget the basics – to always be careful of roads and oncoming cars.

In Melbourne, a recent case showed a lady getting killed by a hit-and-run driver while she was on the game. In Southern California, two players even fell off a cliff! That’s what happens when you get your head in the game and out of the world.

#4. Exercising Is Good For You

Pokémon Go is rapidly changing the world. Like it or not, the game actually has the ability to make people leave the house – a feat no other game has accomplished before.

Case in point – you cannot go far in the game without first getting out of the house. You probably did not realise it, but walking around your neighbourhood and visiting the different Poké Stops “forces” you to be more active! Instead of leading a sedentary lifestyle and cooping up at home, slumped over your computer all day, playing Pokémon Go helps you get out of the house for some fresh air and exercise.

#5. Make Time For Family Bonding

Because we are always so caught up with our own lives, we tend to forget about our loved ones, or to take them for granted. But family is one we must not neglect, and no matter how busy we are, family bonding is a must.

With Pokémon Go, we now have new family activities – which is actually healthy! There’s now a new common topic in the family to talk and to laugh about!

#6. Respect Other People’s Privacy

Sometimes, Gyms might be situated at people’s homes, but that doesn’t give you the excuse to stand around their space trying to win your next battle.

A man living in Massachusetts has his house labelled as a Gym, and he was inevitably quite disturbed to find people lingering outside his home trying to battle the Gym. Real life rules still apply, even when you’re in the world of Pokémon Go.

Privacy is something we cherish, and we must not forget that it is precious to other people too.
