A mere mention of hawker fare within Serangoon Gardens and many people’s minds will naturally gravitate towards Chomp Chomp food centre. Prestigious as Chomp Chomp’s reputation may be, it is still lacking in one Singaporean favourite – chicken rice.

However, just a stone throw away from the popular eatery in Serangoon Garden Food Market lies Poh Poh Roasted Chicken and Duck Rice.

This humble stall may not be high up amongst the chicken rice greats in Singapore, but it sure did not disappoint our hungry stomachs either. And if you find yourself hungry in the late afternoon, you will be glad to know that Poh Poh charges up to 30% off half/ whole chicken after 5pm.

After 5pm on days except for Thursday, you can get a half chicken at only S$8 and whole chicken at only S$16 – is this real life?

We got ourselves two plates of their aromatic chicken rice and a half chicken to share. For fear of not being full enough we also one braised egg bringing the total to an affordable S$9.80.

Our hearts were sold the second we took a mouthful of the rice. It was fragrant yet not overly oily. Ideal for people conscious about their health (and waistline).

Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice Chicken Skin

The roasted chicken was tender, succulent and extremely flavourful, and having gotten half a chicken to share, it gave us a good variety of cuts. The thigh portion was an absolute treat given how extra tender it was compared to the breast meat.

The chicken was roasted for long periods of time, allowing most of the fat between the layers of skin to render out. The result? A well roasted and thin layer of skin that was neither oily nor overbearing.

Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice Chilli

Let us not forget the stunning chilli sauce that comes along with the whole dish. Spicier than your average chicken rice chilli sauce, it did well to cut through the robust flavours and give the dish a kick.

Kudos to the shop owners too for their excellent service. The lady who served us was efficient and friendly – traits that seem to be lacking in many hawker establishments these days.

In a country where food prices are ever increasing, it is always comforting to know that affordable meals like this still exist. All it takes is the determination to go out and find it.
