MLP Kumoya Collage

As the last quarter of 2018 approaches, it’s only appropriate to welcome a little bit of magic, fantasy and friendship to the season. Known for their past successful collaborations with popular icons such as Cinnamonroll, Miffy and Care Bears, Kumoya wraps up the season for the year with a dash of magic and sparkles with the final pop-up for the year, Kumoya x My Little Pony pop-up cafe.

Getting us into the festive mood this year, the wonderful, magical ponies that bring out our wonderful childhood memories and rainbow dreams will transform the interior of Kumoya with rainbows, stars and fluffy clouds into the likes of Equestria.

Head on down to Kumoya from 27 September to 30 December to experience for yourself the magic of friendship through the special My Little Pony-inspired menu.

With 5 main dishes, 8 snacks, 5 desserts and 10 beverages to choose from, you’d be absolutely spoilt for choice. Our suggestion? Pick your favourite pony and fly with it because here, everything looks magical.

MLP Kumoya Drinks

The epitome of the phrase “too cute to eat”, the dishes served are nothing short of visually stunning without compromising on flavour. We started with the Twilight Sparkle Sparkling Water Melon Soda With Fluffy Cotton Candy (S$12.90) as well as Magical Friends Vanilla Strawberry Frappe With Colourful Donut Cake (S$13.90).

The melon soda involves a bit of hands-on action as you pour the soda through the cotton candy before it “rains” into the syrup below. Just like the name, it’s fluffy and sweet and perfect for any sweet tooth. While the melon taste wasn’t very prominent here, it made for a much more refreshing drink.

As for the frappe, it’s very much reminiscent of one of Starbuck’s Christmas special strawberry drinks—an indulgent delight that’s full of ice cream goodness.

MLP Kumoya Shrimp Bomb

Among all the appetisers, the Shrimp Bomb With Wasabi Mayo (S$12.90) stood out the most to us. Described as a “bomb” of a snack, we definitely weren’t disappointed. The fluffy breading with a light crispy exterior kept the little morsels of shrimp balls moist without hiding any of the original shrimp flavours and melded well with the tangy wasabi mayo.

MLP Kumoya Chicken Waffle

While it might seem like an unusual combination, the pairing of fried chicken and sweet fluffy waffles are slowly making their way around town to become a stable menu item. Here, they serve it up in the form of Pinkie Pie Playful Waffles With Karaage Chicken (S$23.90), using juicy Japanese karaage chicken and a house-made shoyu glaze instead to touch on their French-Japanese roots.

The waffles were slight, soft and buttery, a perfect contrast to the savoury juicy chicken morsels. Served alongside a mix of fresh rainbow garden salad, the entire dish wasn’t too heavy as the tartness of the salad helped to cut through the generous serving of fried chicken.

MLP Kumoya Curry Rice

We also ordered Friendship Meets Love Seafood Curry Rice (S$28.90). The rice and potatoes were plated in an adorable heart shape, with a little Fluttershy wafer. Before the dish arrived, the smell of the curry was already wafting through the air and stimulating our supposedly full bellies.

Infused with beetroots, the fluffy rice soaked up all the umami curry goodness to create a creamy yet comforting mouthful. It comes along with breaded calamari, ebi shrimps and scallops, which were delightfully light.

MLP Kumoya Glaze Galaxy Cake

Perhaps the dish we were most excited to try — Magical Princesses With Magic Potion Galaxy Cake (S$21.90) — arrived with a big fanfare as clouds of dry ice engulfed the cake in a magical mist. The glaze sits in a little container, and when you swirl it around it definitely does resemble a potion from a fairytale.

Ready your phones to take that perfect Instagram video as you pour out the glaze onto the cake, and watch as the galaxy moves and unfolds before your very eyes. When you’re done “ooh”-ing and “aah”-ing at the visual treat, sink your fork into the soft creamy mango mousse and light fluffy sponge and relish in the simple joys in life that is this cake.

MLP Kumoya Int

Of course, it isn’t a pop-up cafe if you don’t get to take home a piece of the experience with you. Every drink entitles you to a special limited-edition collaboration coaster, while every order of their Friendship Meets Love Seafood Curry Rice comes with a My Little Pony Key And Coin Pouch, available in 4 different designs of Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, while stocks last. The Magical Princesses With Magic Potion Galaxy Cake also comes with a free Twilight Sparkle Keyring Plush, so do head down ASAP before they run out!

As the last pop-up collaboration of the year running from the 27th of September to the 30th of December, Kumoya aims to bring a little bit of magic to end the year with. It’s certainly not the last to expect of them, and you can expect much more in 2019 too. With a whimsical and magical afternoon awaiting you, who will you bring with to experience the magic of friendship?
