There is something undeniably comforting about a piping-hot bowl of beef noodles. A bowl filled to the brim with chewy, springy rice noodles, adorned with tender slices of rare beef, scallions and topped with copious amounts of delicious sauce—what’s not to love?

There are many places in Singapore that sell decent beef noodles but one of our favourites is Joo Chiat Beef King. Despite its name, it isn’t located in Joo Chiat and is actually tucked away in a corner of the famous food haven Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre. Is their beef noodles truly deserving of its stature? Read on to find out.

The stall sells a variety of beef noodles and they’ve been doing so for almost 7 years. The recipes are all inspired by the chefs home in Shan Dong, China, which is why his noodles are a little special from the other stalls out there.

Joo Chiat Beef King Beef Brisket Noodles Dry

First up, we had a bowl of their classic Dry Beef Brisket Noodles (S$4.50). When you order their dry noodles, you can also request to have a bowl of their beef soup on the side.

The noodles were decently chewy and because it was kway teow noodles, they managed to hold more of the gravy, so each mouthful of noodle gives you a satisfying amount of flavour. The beef brisket here was incredibly tender and soaked up all of that rich gravy giving each bite a burst of umami.

We also had a go at their Spicy Beef Noodles (S$5) which comprised yellow noodles and generous chunks of tender beef that were doused in a spicy soup.

The soup reminded us a little of mala and it provided us with a decent amount of heat without being too overwhelming. The beef also soaked up quite a fair bit of that aromatic spicy flavour which nicely complemented its beefy, somewhat buttery flavour.

Overall, we feel that Joo Chiat Beef King is a must-try if you are in the area. It isn’t the best beef noodles out there, but they really serve some pretty solid, comforting bowls of beef noodles that hit the spot nonetheless.
