Guan Seng Carrot Cake – Hugely Underrated Fried Carrot Cake In Telok Blangah
A staple for many since decades ago, we admit that finding yourself a decent fried carrot cake to kickstart your day with isn’t difficult to find here Singapore but to find one that isn’t overly greasy coupled with an insanely generous pour of sweet dark sauce is a bit of a rarity. Thankfully, on one of our recent trips to Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre, we stumbled upon Guan Seng Carrot Cake.
Here, they dish out plates of the standard black and white carrot cake, both of which come with lots of eggs. Priced extremely affordable at S$2.50 for a small portion and S$3/S$4 for a medium and large portion respectively, this is one stall we feel all fried carrot cake lovers ought to try.
We opted for a mix of both the white and black (S$3) allowing us to savour both the sweet version and the more savoury option.
Soft, fluffy and boasting a heady aroma of wok hei, both the black and white version were done well.
If we had to pick a favourite, we would easily choose the black version. Unlike many, these folks don’t skimp on the sweet dark sauce and they fry it to the point that every morsel is caramelised beautifully, yet not overwhelmingly sweet such that the sweetness overpowers the charred wok hei fragrance.
