As far as roasted meat goes, the best ones are the ones that boast a deeply roasted char with a caramelised sheen, tender meat with a decent amount of flavourful fat and more importantly, ones that will not cost an arm and a leg—that’s right, we are talking about char siew.

Char siew is not something hard to find, in fact, you will probably chance upon one at just about any hawker centre or coffee shop stall in Singapore. But only a few places pull it off perfectly. Over at Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodles located within 7 Stars Coffeeshop in Bukit Batok, what you are in for is sheer roasted meat perfection.

At only S$3 for a decent portion of anything from their hearty char siew rice to their wanton noodles, not only will you have yourself a pretty affordable meal, but one that will have you yearning for more. Read on to find out just what we mean.

Nestled in 7 Stars Coffee Shop in Bukit Batok, just a few shops away western stall, Rice Bowl Hero, this humble stall dishes out a pretty extensive array of meat-based dishes from roast pork belly, soy sauce chicken (which we suspect is pretty good too) as well as their sensational char siew.

For something so simple and ordinary, their Char Siew Noodle (S$3) really does hit the spot. It consists of springy egg noodles tossed in a flavourful sauce with some chilli paste added, crisp kai lan and a couple of thick slices of char siew.  The char siew was sweet, savoury and packed with lovely roasted flavours.

We particularly enjoyed the thick layer of fat that not only provided an additional punch of flavour but also a nice soft texture.

Similar in preparation to the noodles (minus the greens), the Char Siew Rice (S$3) does well in soaking up all that deliciously sweet sauce, and its neutral taste really allows the flavour of the char siew to shine all the more prominently.

Bukit Batok may be a tad out of the way for us, but for char siew this good, we would be more than willing to make the trip down again. Perhaps next time we will return with more of our friends so as to try their other meat varieties as well.
