Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu – Handmade Yong Tau Foo & Mouth-Watering Chicken Wings
Nutritious, hearty and comforting, Yong Tau Foo is a Chinese dish that is pretty underrated but well-loved by the locals when they want to have a guilt-free but satisfying meal. You can find Yong Tau Foo stalls in many hawker centres and coffee shops but most are mediocre at best and certainly not worthy of a special mention.
Yet, one that has caught our attention is Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu—a popular Yong Tau Foo chain that offers a mixture of Yong Tau Foo ingredients, seafood and meat pastes and a favourite amongst customers—deep-fried chicken wings.
Located just beside Halal-certified Burgs, the third outlet of Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu located at Viva Business Park is a must-visit for those who are working around the area.
Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu’s Yong Tau Foo Set (S$5.80) is everything you would ever want in a bowl of Yong Tau Foo. Featuring a preset of mixed pastes—including pork, prawn and fish—in a piping bowl of bee hoon hot soup and a side of fried chicken wings, the substantial portion should be enough even for those who are looking for a more filling meal.
The Yong Tau Foo pieces are made into the perfect size without it being overly large so every mouthful is comfortable and easy to eat. The variety of pastes also meant it doesn’t ever get mundane as you can switch it up with different seafood or meat pieces. Although good on their own, those who prefer a stronger taste can dip the ingredients into the chilli and sweet sauce.
However, what made the meal memorable was the chicken wings. The firm, yet juicy chicken wings had a great bite to them but it was the crispy and flaky skin that got us hooked. The sheer decadence of the golden brown chicken skin went above and beyond what we had ever expected—since it was just a side dish to complement their signature Yong Tau Foo soup.
This special set is only available from Monday to Friday, between 11.30am – 2pm. Yes, it is catered for the working professionals during lunch time but the general public is more than welcome to pop by and give it a try too!
If you are not able to make it in time for their special set, rest assured that you still can get the a la carte dishes. The usual price for their Yong Tau Foo goes at S$4.50, where you also get seven pieces of Yong Tau Foo ingredients and bee hoon in soup. Additional items to order include the Chicken Wings (S$6/ 4 pieces), Bitter Gourd and Beancurd.
