Yummy Noodle House – Does It Live Up To Its Name?
Many people are under the misconception that Sembawang Hills Food Centre is located in Sembawang. In actual fact, it is located in Upper Thompson Road and is home to plenty of hidden hawker gems. One of these would be Yummy Noodle House, which serves a number of classic Singaporean noodles dishes that are great for when those noodle cravings kick in.
Many people flock over to have their laksa, but truly, it is their wanton noodles that stand out the most. Here’s what we thought.
Sembawang Hills Food Centre is pretty small, so this humble stall is not hard to locate. The first thing you see when you come across the stall is a giant blue signboard followed by their huge menu at the front of the stall which shows all the noodles and side dishes they have available.
The most popular dish here is their laksa, but we were curious about their wanton noodles (S$3/S$4).
You have the option of opting for your noodles to be dry or soup. We opted for dry.
What makes or breaks a good plate of wanton noodles are the noodles. The noodles here were well cooked and springy, and they soaked up the sauce nicely. We also feel that they gave a substantial amount of noodles to fill you up. However, if you are a big eater, you could always opt for the S$4 option instead.
We opted to have fried wontons instead of the usual soup wontons as they gave the overall dish more texture. The fried wontons were nice and crispy and added a nice crunchy element. The char siew slices were a tad bit disappointing though. They tasted good, but were a tad bit too dry, thinly sliced and lacked the slightly charred characteristic that we love. We would have preferred thicker, juicier and more charred slices.
Overall, we feel that Yummy Noodle House is a good place to go to for noodles. Their wanton noodles are decent save for the char siew—which although was not terrible, was lacklustre in certain areas. During our next trip, perhaps we might even give their all-time popular laksa a try in the future to see if it lives up to the publics rave reviews.
