Do a Google search on where you can get the best Lor Mee in Singapore, and there will be no doubt that Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee will take the cake. Although there is definitely no lack of good lor mee all over Singapore, Xin Mei Xiang Zheng Zong Lor Mee is undisputedly one of the most popular lor mee stalls you can find—so popular that even Steven Lim from Buzzfeed patronised this stall during his short stay in Singapore!
This humble stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre whips up one of the best Lor Mee around, and its popularity is evident from the queues that start forming up as soon as the stall opens.
It was only after close to an hour before we reached the front of the queue and got our piping hot bowl of lor mee.
We opted for a mix of flat, yellow noodles and thin beehoon, which we felt provided the best of both worlds—the thicker yellow noodles giving us a pleasant bite upon every mouthful and the thinner beehoon smoothly gliding down our throats.
For just S$4, we got a generous helping of fried snapper fish flakes and a hard-boiled egg nestled atop the noodles.
While these components are all good on their own, the best part is how the smooth, thick and gooey gravy brings everything together. Savoury and slightly sweet, this addictive gravy is what we deem as the star of the show.
We assure you that it is not difficult to spot this stall at Old Airport Road Food Centre—just spot the stall with the longest queues outside and that would be it.
Do note that they often sell out before lunchtime, so head over early to avoid disappointment!
