There is something about carbonated drinks that we all love; that fizzy, bubbly goodness is addictive.
On top of that, there is a substantial amount of sugar in soda drinks that make them taste even better. It quenches our thirst and fills us up with joy every time we drink a can of soda. There is nothing like a glass of carbonated drink to cool us down on a hot and humid day.

#1 HIGH SUGAR CONTENT
If you don’t already know this, it is about high time you do.
One can of soda contains the equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar! When sugar is in liquid form, it goes into the bloodstream at a rapid pace and the pancreas has to come up with a larger amount of insulin so that your body is able to process the sugar. The pancreas may not be able to keep up with the higher demands to produce insulin if there is regular consumption of soda. This results in the inability in processing sugar which increases your risk in developing diabetes.
#2 TOOTH DECAY
As with all food that is high in sugar content, drinking soda regularly will build up plaque in the teeth, which in turn results in gum diseases. Furthermore, the acidity of the drink makes your teeth weaker by dissolving the mineral content in the enamel, and eventually lead to tooth decay.
In addition to this, the acidity in sodas is actually worse than the solid sugars in candies!
#3 WEIGHT GAIN
Soda is one of the biggest sources of empty calories and several scientific studies have proven that soft drinks are directly related to weight gain. Researchers of this subject even came up with a mathematical calculation that for each additional soda consumed, the chances of reaching obesity increases by 1.6 times.

#4 HIGHER RISK OF HEART DISEASE
The link between sugar and heart disease has been established since decades ago, but recent studies have further confirmed these strong links. There is a study (sample size of 40,000 males) which concluded that those who consume one can of soda per day has 20% higher risk of getting a heart attack compared to those who don’t drink carbonated drinks as frequently.
#5 RISK OF DEMENTIA
A study has found that the higher your sugar level, the more likely you are to suffer from dementia. As sugary beverages lead to rapid spikes in blood sugars and in return cause insulin resistance, they can increase your risk in having impaired memory and decision-making capabilities.
#6 SHORTENS YOUR LIFESPAN
High levels of phosphorus in dark soda may shorten your lifespan. In 2010, a research done by FASEB Journal on mice indicated that high phosphorus levels in the blood stream shorten lifespans by about one quarter.

#7 MESSES UP YOUR METABOLISM
Studies done by a researcher at Bangor University which involved 11 healthy men and women drinking a cup of Super Gulp every day for four weeks found that their metabolism changed after four weeks. This makes it harder for them to burn the fats of their bodies and lose weight.
#8 DIET SODAS ARE NOT ANY BETTER
Sure, diet sodas may be “calorie-friendly” but that does not mean it will aid weight loss. As a matter of fact, it has been found that diet soda drinkers has a 70% greater increase in waist circumference when compared with non-drinkers. Those who consume two or more sodas in a day faced with a 500% greater increase.
These statistics are simply shocking!
