The Stew House – Hearty Western & Asian-Style Stews In A Hawker Centre
While stews such as a classic French beef bourguignon or even a chicken velouté are often associated with fancy restaurants, The Stew House over at Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre aims to change that perception—one hearty bowl at a time.
Dishing out both Western and Asian-style stews at affordable price points, having yourself a comforting bowl of stew at any time of the day is no longer a long shot, let alone something that calls for a specific occasion.
What we admire about their style of stew-making is their use of a variety of spices and herbs not typically found in your typical Asian stew—adding a subtle yet interesting new modern touch to popular classics.
For a hint of spice and complex flavours, go for the Chicken Tikka Masala with Rice (S$5). At such a reasonable price point, what you can expect to get is a heap ladle-full of thick, luscious gravy along with generous pieces of chicken thigh meat.
Steaming hot and brimming with warm, savoury aromas, our noses were taken on a sensorial trip, but having eaten the first bite, we were greeted by some unfamiliar flavours. While all the usual spices were present, we noticed a hint of lemongrass which gave the dish a rather bright, citrusy lift.
In our opinion, the best way to enjoy this S$5 bowl of saucy goodness in all its savoury glory is to spoon it over your rice and enjoy it together.
While the Asian-style stew managed to impress us with its complex yet delightful qualities, we must say that their Western counterpart left us speechless—not in a good way.
We ordered the Chicken and Mushroom Velouté with Rice (S$5) and was greeted by a rather pitiful bowl of goo. Granted that chicken-based stews have a tendency to take on a murky colour after simmering for long periods of time, this was on the verge of being grey.
Taste-wise, it lacked flavour, not to mention adequate seasoning to at least give the plain rice a purpose for being there. Sure, the chicken thigh pieces and the vegetables were tender but that alone was unfortunately not enough in this case. Bland and disappointing, we probably would have been better off opting for the Beef Bourguignon with Rice instead.
