Hidden away in Tampines is a newly-opened gem called The Social Outcast. This Muslim-owned hawker stall plans to revolutionise the way we view hawker Western food, using a charcoal-flame grill to revitalise the Western food scene in Singapore. Though harder to control, once done right, the result is absolutely fantastic.

We ordered their French Onion & Mushroom Beef Burger (S$10.90) that came with a side of cajun-spiced fries. The burger itself is a simple one – coming with sweet caramelised onions, sautéed mushrooms and a juicy charcoal-grilled beef patty. The bun is a buttery grilled brioche bun.

The fries were crisp and fluffy on the inside and was a pretty good accompaniment to the burger. We liked how they were slightly spiced but would have liked it with slightly more salt.

The burger was definitely one of the best hawker burgers we have ever had in Singapore. Each component of the burger melded perfectly with each other. We especially loved the patty that was seasoned with rosemary and seared perfectly on the charcoal grill.

The owner of the humble stall was very friendly as well, coming to check whether we enjoyed the meal. He also explained to us that despite the charcoal grill being more time-consuming, it delivered higher-quality burgers once mastered.

The Social Outcast also serves other interesting burgers never-seen-before in the hawker scene such as the Teriyaki Unagi Burger (S$15.90) and Sesame Mayo Portobello Burger (S$8.90). Their 400 Day Grain-Fed Australia F1 Wagyu Beef Burger also comes at an affordable price tag of S$19.90.
