Singapore Night Festival 2017 – 10 Light Spectacles You Can Look Forward To
The Singapore Night Festival returns for its 10th edition from 18 to 26 August 2017, enlivening the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct with an array of light installations, and enthralling local and international performances.
For two weekends, art and culture spill onto the streets when dusk falls.
Started in 2008, it has grown to become a keystone in the region’s calendar of outdoor arts and culture festivals, becoming more than just Singapore’s largest outdoor performing arts festival, but also a world-class platform for local and international artists to come together, create and collaborate, and to enthral festival-goers from around the world.
Every year promises an exhilarating experience and we are stoked to find out what this year’s event has in store. Here are 10 light spectacles that you can look forward to at this year’s event.
This year’s festival kicks off with Night Lights on the first weekend, allowing everyone to enjoy the lights with lesser crowds.
#1 CONVOLUTIONS
Designed as a visual poem, Convolutions links architecture, projection, lights, laser and music in a poetic and technological ballet completely transforming the facade of the National Museum of Singapore into a contemporary light show.
Where you can find it:
National Museum of Singapore facade
18 to 26 August 2017

#2 THE TREE THAT BLINKED
The Tree That Blinked is a series of portraits projected into a Banyan tree right outside the National Museum of Singapore. The illusion of someone’s face taking shape on a tree can be compelling but also a little shocking.
Some think that the leaves have been individually painted, and others, that the tree itself has been trimmed to the shape of a head—but it is all an illusion.

18 to 26 August 2017

#3 FLOCK
Step directly into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s 1876 ballet, Swan Lake with Flock (2017). An immersive space, it combines light, sound and projection with live motion tracking technology.
Visitors are placed within the corps de ballet, where they can explore narrative from a unique perspective and be part of the historical ballet itself.

National Design Centre

#4 TESSELLATIONS OF TIME
This particular art piece is one of the more interactive setups at this year’s night festival. Invoking the fluctuations of coded lights and digitally fabricated pods, the work strives to create a conversation as people enter and interact with the ever-changing light patterns.

#5 NOSTOS: RECORDS OF THE SELF
To mark the Singapore Night Festival’s 10th anniversary, Aesop offers a scent experience for the occasion. Visitors use their nose to navigate the space, imprinting the aroma to memory. The bulbs provide heat which enhances the scent and also creates an intimate setting.

National Museum of Singapore, Gallery10
18 to 26 August 2017
10am – 12am
#6 LES HOMMES DEBOUT (THE STANDING MEN)

Where you can find it:
Singapore Art Museum
18 to 26 August 2017

#8 DREAM CITY WINDOW
This is another interactive art piece that employs user-generated interactive visuals that are derived from abstractions of the evolving environment. As people pass this installation by, the visuals shown will change to match the movement of each passerby.
As such, the public is invited to bring this structure to life with their own digital silhouettes.
