Let’s face it, we know that the most exciting thing about a sushi restaurant is their sushi conveyor belt. It’s just so fun and exciting to watch those colourful plates of sushi roll past us one by one, allowing us to take our time to chose what we want. The thrill lies in never knowing for sure what comes next.

At humble steamboat restaurant, Shi Shang Lao, they adopt the same system as well. Only, the items on rotation come in the form of raw meats, seafood and vegetables—fresh and ready to be snagged and cooked in your boiling pot.

Shi Shang Lao knows what is up, and they have therefore come up with the ingenious concept of having your hot pot ingredients on conveyor belts instead of conventional buffet counters or menus. They just opened in September 2017 so they are still fairly new here, but they certainly have been raking up a lot of attention because its the first ever conveyor belt hotpot restaurant in Singapore.

The dining area isn’t cramped, and is incredibly roomy and spacious, so its great for people who hate having to squeeze

So, how does it work?

You get your own individual pot of soup, which is great because it means that you can be selfish and you don’t have to share with anyone and fight about what kind of soup base you want. You can choose from over 10 soup bases, so you definitely will be spoilt for choice.

Some of the soup bases they have here are Tomato Pot (S$5), Herbal Duck Pot (S$5) and Sour Vege Fish Pot (S$5). For those of you who like some kick to your soup, you can always opt for the Fragrant Spicy Pot (S$5) or the Extra Spicy Pot (S$5).

After that, just sit back, relax, and wait for the food to go by for you to chose what you want! It is that easy, and perfect for lazy people who hate having to walk to and fro from the buffet counter to get your ingredients (actually, even non-lazy people hate doing that. It’s so tedious).

The only walking that you will need to do is to the self-serve condiment station, where you can get creative and mix up your own delicious concoction to dip your food in.

Shi Shang Lao is not stingy with their food variety. They have over a whopping 100 ingredients and 20 different kinds of drinks, so buckle up and get ready for a feast! The prices of the ingredients are labelled by their sticks — S$1 for wooden satay skewers and S$3 for metal skewers.

If you want shabu slices, you have to order them separately. These come in generous portions and there are a variety of different cuts of meat available, so we suggest that if you’re a group, you can order a few and share them around.

For our seafood lovers out there, Shi Shang Lao also serves fresh seafood. There are also fresh fruits available on the conveyor belt for dessert, which is a perfect way to end off the meal.
