10 Things You Might Not Know About The Late Mr. S. R. Nathan

Singapore’s former president Mr S.R. Nathan suffered a stroke and was hospitalised in Singapore General Hospital since 31 July 2016, and he had passed away peacefully last night at age 92; Singapore has lost a true son.

He was a man loved by many, for he was the People’s President. He led a full life by serving Singapore and its people. As we mourn the loss of a great man, let us look back on some of his monumental achievements. Here are 10 facts that you might not have known about Mr S.R. Nathan.

#1 He has written a book.

It is called S R Nathan in Conversation, and Mr Nathan wrote about his personal reflections, as well as the future challenges that he believes Singapore might face. The book was launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

#2 He was once a medical social worker.

Mr Nathan worked for the Singapore Civil Service from from 1955 to 1962.

#3 He was the director of Singapore Press Holdings and Marshall Cavendish.

Yes, that is the brand that’s in-charge of publishing a majority of the textbooks here in Singapore.

#4 He is the longest-serving president.

Mr Nathan served as president for a total of 12 years.

#5 He did not continue for a third term due to age.

S. R Nathan didn’t continue his presidency, as he believed that his old age would hinder his ability to fulfill the responsibilities as a president.

#6 Mr Nathan was once a translator.

He once worked as an interpreter for the Civilian Police during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore.

#7 He volunteered to be held hostage.

In year 1974, Mr Nathan was among the group of government officers who offered to be taken hostage by the Japanese Red Army (JRA) to secure the release of civilian hostages.

#8 He founded the President’s Challenge.

The charity has been a running success for 16 years, and he had since made charity a lifestyle among countless Singaporeans. It has managed to raise more than S$100 million so far!

#9 He owns a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa).

It was awarded to Mr Nathan at the Singapore Management University (SMU) during a private ceremony in 2014.

#10 He was the first Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Nathan was appointed this position in February 1979.
