Oiishii Corner – Delicious Halal Japanese Donburis And Noodles In Toa Payoh
While rice bowls have been on the rise and making waves as of late, for those of us who are Muslim, however, finding that perfect donburi that’s also Halal-certified, affordable and delicious is a little more challenging.
Not to worry, Oiishii Corner—a Muslim-owned hawker stall serving up Halal Japanese food—can be found over at Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre in, you guessed it, the corner.
From donburi to ramen to udon, with flavours ranging from the usual teriyaki and Japanese curry to more local variations like rendang and black pepper, there’s always something for everyone. There are also side dishes such as Chawanmushi, Fried Tofu and Inari Sushi to go along with your mains, or if you’re feeling a bit peckish.
Aptly named Oiishii Beef Don (S$5.50), it is indeed delicious. The thin tender slices of beef were well marinated in a spicy kimchi sauce, stir-fried with soft caramelised onions right before serving. The generous portion of rice had an even split between the beef and fresh chopped vegetables topped with mayonnaise.
The combination of kimchi and mayonnaise made for a rich creamy bite that had both the irresistible heat from the spice and the extra tang from the mayonnaise. It’s a pairing that we wouldn’t have considered before, but it’s something we’re very much on board with right now. Despite our relatively small appetites, we did our best to spoon more of it into our mouths because it was just that addictive.
On the other hand, the Teriyaki Chicken Udon (S$5) had nothing much to brag about. It covers all bases, it’s simple, basic and comforting, just like any other udon you’d find at any hawker centre or food court, but ultimately there’s nothing special about it.
Perhaps we should have ordered their other noodle dishes, which on hindsight, looked like they had more potential.
From prices as low as just S$4 (not including the sides), you can get a hearty bowl of rice or noodles to fill your stomach with without having to worry about wasting precious quota. These bowls are bona fide lip-smackingly good, it’ll make you wish you lived nearby.
