Makan Food Place – Mee Siam & Lontong In Upper Thomson To Kickstart Your Day
Located on the edge of Upper Thompson amongst many rustic terrace houses and chic restaurants lies Sembawang Hills Food Centre and within it lies Makan Food Place. Similar to its simple and straightforward name, their dishes leave little to the imagination, serving up unpretentious Malay classics.
For those that can’t start the day without a bowl of their favourite mee siam or mee rebus, rest assured Makan Food Place has all your favourite Malay delights. That also means you no longer have to travel out to the heart of the city just to settle your mee siam cravings.
They sell all the typical Malay hawker dishes here—Nasi Lemak, Lontong, Mee Rebus as well as Nasi Campur, but we decided to keep it simple instead and ordered a humble plate of Mee Siam (S$3).
Served alongside a hard-boiled egg, the entire dish couldn’t get any simpler. Here, the bee hoon is lightly fried before it’s served with soup. What it does is it keeps the noodles a little firmer, giving it slightly more bite.
The soup itself was also a good mix of sweet and spicy, albeit not as fragrant as most other mee siam, it was still satisfying. For those that prefer a light broth rather than one more thick and gloopy for their mee siam, this is definitely the place for you. As the noodles readily soaked up the broth, it made for a really good slurping experience.
If you’d like a bit of kick in your mee siam, add some of their chilli sauce it bring it up a notch. If not, add a touch of lime for that extra touch of zesty tanginess.
While it’s worth pointing out that it wasn’t the most mindblowing mee siam out there, it’s still a decent bowl not to be missed out on. If you’re ever in the area, do remember to give it a try!
