New HDB Town Tengah Will Be Singapore’s First Car-Free Town Centre
Tengah, the newest Housing Development Board (HDB) town, will be launched in 2018. Located between Jurong East, Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Batok, the town centre will be set amongst an abundance of lush greenery, giving it its nickname ‘Forest Town’.
But besides that, Tengah will also be the first car-free residential area in Singapore. Traffic will instead run underneath the town centre. Yes, that is right. Underground roads are now becoming a thing.

Instead of having oridinary roads in Tengah, there will be allocated walking and cycling paths – all in part of Singapore’s initiative to becoming more car-lite. There will be a central park, as well as little “community farmways” built among the flats with gardens, play areas and more.
Tengah will also include a forest corridor stretching across 5km, linking the town to the surrounding greenery between the western and central catchment areas. It will eventually contain 30,000 new public housing units and 12,000 private housing units.
If you are interesting in seeing the blueprints for Tengah, you can visit the exhibition at HDB Hub in Toa Payoh from 09 September 2016 to 25 September 2016, from 9am to 8pm daily.
