Ah Tan Wings — Crispy Hawker Centre Har Cheong Gai To-Die-For
Nestled in the newly-built Yishun Park Hawker Centre opened by the good folks at the Timbre group, there lies a stall specialising in our favourite zi char snack, har cheong gai (prawn paste chicken). Going by the name Ah Tan Wings, this is where you can find perhaps the tastiest and crispiest har cheong gai around in a hawker centre setting.
Many might have seen their pop-up stores around at a variety of festivals but this venture would be their first proper stall. Famed for their signature crispy chicken har cheong gai, Ah Tan Wings also offers a more substantial item in the form of their Atas Wing Meal that includes aromatic rice and a fried egg in addition to their stellar shrimp paste wings.
Chowing down on one of these bad boys accompanied by an ice-cold beer, is there really anything better?
Their menu is not overly extensive in that they only feature their signature har cheong gai as an a la carte item or as a meal that comes with aromatic rice and a sunny side up egg.
If you are looking for a light bite or perhaps something to snack on as you knock back a cold one, their Shrimp Paste Wings (S$1.70 for a whole wing) is the best thing you could possibly get.
Out of all the many shrimp paste chicken wings, or chicken wings in general that we have tried over the years, Ah Tan’s signature item goes far beyond your average deep-fried wing. To say the least, we were hooked upon our very first bite. The Shrimp Paste Wings were insanely crisp without being too heavy on the batter while the flesh was succulent and exploding with juicy chicken goodness.
The chicken was also flavourful with the flavour of the shrimp paste penetrating it right down to the middle and although there was an apparent note of umami present, we liked that the shrimp paste was not overpowering.
For something more substantial, consider the Atas Wing Meal (S$5.20) that comprises 2 shrimp paste wings, aromatic rice and a fried egg. Do not be fooled by its mediocre appearance, the aromatic rice really packs a flavour punch.
