Some say that pork porridge is meant to be had for breakfast but we argue that having it for supper is a better idea.
Known to be a comforting, go-to breakfast item, most porridge stalls in Singapore are open as soon as the sun rises and some close as early as noon. However, luckily for us, there are several hawker stalls who serve delightful bowls of pork porridge even during the wee hours.
Nestled within the folds of Bedok 85 Fengshan Centre, Chai Chee Pork Porridge offers a selective but enticing range of porridge dishes, with their speciality being the pork porridge. For comforting congee that comes with huge portions and reasonable prices to curb your hunger pangs in the middle of the night, Chai Chee Pork Porridge is it.
Costing just S$3.50 for a big serving of pork porridge with a side of youtiao, you are sure to get the ultimate bang for your buck for this unassuming bowl contains an unbelievably generous helping of pork meatballs inside.
Tender, succulent and fragrant with distinct notes of sesame oil used in its making, the meatballs are truly the perfect accompaniment to this comforting bowl of congee—so much that we wouldn’t mind having it on a sweltering hot day even.
Smooth, thick and almost gooey—their congee boasts a texture that can only be achieved after boiling for hours over.
For an added hit of creamy decadence, we suggest that you add an egg for an extra 50 cents and mix it in together with your porridge.
While it may not take the cake as the best pork porridge that we have tried, Chai Chee Pork Porridge serves a pretty darn good bowl of porridge that we’d gladly mop up anytime.
Other options include the cuttlefish porridge (S$3.50), chicken porridge (S$3.50) and the century egg porridge (S$4) which is another of their signature items on the menu.
