Located in the basement of the bustling Clementi Mall, NATSU is a strictly takeaway stall that serves customisable bowls of Tendon that are both hearty and affordable. Starting at as low as S$0.80 for individual tempura items, feel free to load up on a wide array of delicious fried goodies from sweet potato to pumpkin and the unmissable shrimp tempura.
In light of the massive tendon craze over the past few months, NATSU has to be by far the most affordable around. Their ingredients are freshly deep-fried on the spot ensuring that each bite is crunchy and hot. Hearty and quick, this is a great stopover for lunch on a workday.
The main offerings at this humble tendon takeaway stall are their two rice sets, but of course, you have the option of customising your own tendon bowl as well. Each set comes with a base of Japanese pearl rice, kakiage—essentially shredded vegetables that are deep-fried—and pickles on the side.
The Tempura & Onsen Set (S$5.90) comes with a pumpkin tempura, furikake, a variety of deep-fried vegetables and is topped with a gorgeous onsen egg. The vegetable items were well executed such that they were cooked all the way through with a nice bite to them.
Out of the two, the Tempura Signature Set (S$6.90) was our favourite. It comes with a prawn tempura, two pieces of tender capsicum tempura, lotus root chips and garlic edamame as toppings. The prawn tempura was incredibly crunchy and the subtly sweet flavour of the prawn bolded well with the savoury tendon sauce.
Initially, we had our doubts about a tendon kiosk selling tempura at insanely cheap prices, but overall, we were really pleased with the quality of food here. Every component was cooked perfectly and more importantly, they do not charge exorbitant prices for a basic bowl of tempura and rice. It’s pretty safe to say that their tendon is ‘NATSU’ bad after all.
