Ma-La-Supper-Spots 2

Many food trends come and go in fickle Singapore but ma la may well be an exception. This Sichuan-inspired dish may not be a Singaporean invention but we can all agree that it is perhaps one of the top dishes that has taken over our nation by storm. This one-dish-wonder has experienced much hype over the past few years and the craze is only getting crazier.

Whether it’s a fiery ma la xiang guo or a hearty (but still fiery) ma la hot pot you’re craving for, Singapore has no shortage of such food establishments—this we can all agree on. But what if you happen to be laying on your bed late at night and the sudden craving for ma la kicks in?

Here is our list of 6 places to get fiery ma la past midnight in Singapore to help ease your late-night ma la cravings.

Hai Di Lao

HAI DI LAO

This hot pot chain from the Sichuan Province of China is no stranger to anyone of us. While many would identify them as the hot pot restaurant that offers free-flow snacks and manicure services pre-meal, we know them as a restaurant that dishes out spectacular ma la hot pots with premium quality ingredients.

One of the reasons why we love them is because most, if not all, their outlets open past midnight with their Vivocity outlet opening until 6am daily!

1 Harbourfront Walk, #03-09
Vivocity
Singapore 098585

JIN JIN EATING HOUSE

Right across the street from Bugis Junction, Jin Jin Eating House is the place to go for comparatively affordable and lip-smacking ma la xiang guo. Prices are clearly stated to prevent people from over-ordering

The quality and variety of ingredients here rival their delicious home-made ma la soup broth that is relatively thicker and more full-bodied than regular ma la broths.

496 North Bridge Road,
Singapore 188739

MA LA HUI CUI GUAN

Open till 5.30am daily, Ma La Hui Cui Guan is where night birds can indulge in spicy Chongqing-style steamboat and a wide array of Sichuan delicacies past midnight. One of the draws of this late-night haunt is their practice allowing diners to have their own personal hotpot stove.

Some of their crowd-pleasers include their Boiled Sliced Fish with Sichuan Spicy Pepper (S$30) as well as their as their Chongqing Spicy Diced Chicken (S$16).

SHI AI MALA XIANG GUO

This stand-alone restaurant in Geylang not only features ma la xiang guo, but also dishes out popular delicacies such as pig’s ears fried in chilli oil and spicy chicken. For a late-night snack, Shi Ai Mala Xiang Guo is a good choice, however, parking along Geylang may prove to be rather nightmarish.

Daily: 3pm – 3am
Nearest Station: Aljunied

UPIN HOT POT

Tucked away on level 3 of Clarke Quay Central, Upin Hot Pot is an underrated spot for a la carte steamboat that some say is better than the highly acclaimed Hai Di Lao. If you choose to opt for the ma la soup base, you have the option of choosing the thickness of your broth as well as the amount of chilli oil and chillies that you want to be added into it.

6 Eu Tong Sen Street
#03-87 Clarke Quay Central
Singapore 059817
Tel: +65 6221 5550
Daily: 11am – 3am
Nearest Station: Clarke Quay

WAN XING MALA XIANG GUO

Just a stone’s throw away from popular Teochew porridge stall, Heng Long Teochew Porridge along Upper Serangoon, Wan Xiang Mala Xiang Guo is a ma la-centric eatery that dishes out good-old ma la at fairly affordable price points. What we absolutely love about them is their insanely wide range of ingredient choices—just be sure to go easy on the meat because that will rack up your bill for sure.

1008 Upper Serangoon Road
Singapore 534746
Tel: +65 9129 0988
Daily: 12pm – 2am
Nearest Station: Kovan
