10 Chicken Rice Stalls In Singapore You Seriously Need To Chick Out

Chicken Rice Stalls In Singapore

Chicken Rice is a national dish that can be found almost anywhere and you can have it at almost any time of the day. It has been a debatable subject for there are people who like their chicken roasted while some like them poached—or for lack of a better term, white.

Some even argue that grated ginger and dark sweet soy sauce are necessary condiments that have to be stirred in together with the chilli while others prefer having them separately. Whichever method you prefer, the fact still stands that chicken rice is a dish that bears timeless appeal and can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone.

For us, we believe that good chicken rice requires 3 things: fragrant rice, tender chicken and most importantly, a flavourful chilli sauce. Here are 10 best chicken rice stalls in Singapore that fit all 3 of these criteria.

BOON TONG KEE

Boon Tong Kee is an immensely popular chicken rice food chain with 8 outlets in Singapore. Rich in history and consistent in quality, this restaurant chain has established a strong customer base for its high-quality chicken rice. Among its outlets, Boon Tong Kee at Balestier Road is chosen as the best one.

Boon Tong Kee in itself may not rank as the top chicken rice stalls in Singapore—at least not in our books anyway—but it sure does satisfy our cravings nonetheless and make for a great place to take your expat friends for their first taste of authentic chicken rice.

Chye Kee Roasted Pork Belly

CHYE KEE GOLDHILL ROASTED CHICKEN RICE

At Chye Kee Goldhill Roasted Chicken Rice, the display counter comprises rows of beautifully roasted chicken, char siew, pork belly and duck. This place is always packed even before lunchtime, so we suggest that you should be there early to beat the lunch crowd.

We ordered a plate of both their roasted chicken and pork belly (S$6.80)—since those we were the only 2 items left post-lunchtime. We opted for the chicken breast but were not disappointed because the meat was tender and the skin boasted a subtle yet delightful roasted note, which we finished within minutes.

Hainan Chicken Rice Ball Rice Ball

HAINAN CHICKEN RICE BALL

Many people would immediately think of Malacca when it comes to the iconic chicken rice balls, but what if we told you that it could be found in Singapore as well? Nestled within Shing Boon Hwa Food Centre at Dickson Road, just opposite Sim Lim Tower, lies Hainan Chicken Rice Ball, which specialises in both steamed chicken as well as chicken rice balls.

The rice was a bit sticky and not as oily as your typical chicken rice, which is similar to the texture of a rice dumpling. It was packed with lots of flavours and the stickiness of the rice grains added an interesting textural experience, which made us pleasantly surprised.

Hainan Chicken Rice Ball is a good alternative that we highly recommend if you are craving chicken rice balls without having to travel all the way to Malacca.

HUA KEE CHICKEN RICE

Hua Kee Chicken Rice over at Redhill serves up one of the most tender and delicious poached chicken around, and exuding a beautiful fragrance to top off the experience is a bed of their fluffy and fragrant steamed rice. Their chilli is what keeps us coming back for more because of how addictively flavourful it is. Not overly fiery with adequate seasoning and good tang.

Be prepared to queue for more than 30 minutes if you are there during lunchtime but we guarantee you that it will  be worth the wait.

KAMPONG CHICKEN HOUSE

As its name suggests, Kampong Chicken House serves delicious and healthy kampong chicken. The difference between kampong chicken and regular chicken is that they are bred in a kampong setting–meaning that the chickens themselves feed on anything from bugs, vegetation and seeds, and are given the freedom to roam about without being confined to cages.

The meat might be a little bit tough due to the way they are being reared but at Kampong Chicken House, their meat is leaner and sweeter in comparison, which makes it a healthier choice.

Poh Poh Roasted Chicken Rice Chicken

POH POH ROASTED CHICKEN & DUCK RICE

Adjacent to the popular Serangoon Garden Food Market lies Poh Poh Roasted Chicken and Duck Rice. This modest stall may not be on par with other popular chicken rice stalls in Singapore, but it sure did not disappoint our hungry stomachs either.

The roasted chicken was tender, succulent and extremely flavourful and the thigh portion was an absolute treat given how extra tender it was compared to the breast meat. Furthermore, the stunning chilli sauce that comes along with the whole dish is spicier than your usual chicken rice chilli sauce, which adds a delightful kick to the overall dish.

Pow-Sing-Chicken-Rice

POW SING RESTAURANT

Established in 1983, Pow Sing Restaurant at Serangoon Gardens is known for their traditional Hainanese chicken rice and various Nyonya dishes. We have been patronising Pow Sing Restaurant for years and our experience has always been very satisfying.

Their Hainanese chicken is fragrant and tender, which goes well with their soft, fluffy and aromatic chicken rice. By pairing the spicy chilli sauce with some grated ginger, it definitely completes the entire dish.
