Western-style Rice Bowls and traditional coffeeshops do not usually go hand-in-hand. However, Angmo Food situated in BADALING Coffeeshop at Ang Mo Kio proves that they are the perfect match!
“Angmo” is a Hokkien slang used in Singapore to describe a Caucasian, hence the name. Angmo Food hopes to fuse Western and Local flavours into their food with their affordable fusion food.
Angmo Food offers a variety of Western food dishes, however, most of the customers swarm to the coffee shop for their delectable rice bowls.
Angmo Food launched the “Angmo Rice Bowls 2.0″ two weeks ago as an upgraded version of their original rice bowls.
Layered on top of their steaming garlic butter rice, lies the choice of protein that you have selected together with sauteed cabbage, sweet corn and a perfectly-cooked poached egg.
With three main proteins to choose from—salmon, chicken and Angus beef, we went ahead with chicken and beef as they looked the most tantalising.
Their meats were prepared and cooked by Sous Vide, which refers to the process of cooking a vacuum-sealed food in a water bath at a precise temperature.
When we tucked into the Chicken Chop Rice Bowl (S$6.90), we immediatey understood why the chef opted for such a technique.
The chicken was pan seared before serving, which resulted in a slightly charred crispy skin as we bite into it. However, it was the tenderness of the meat that stole the spotlight. The Sous Vide cooking method has ensured that the meat retained its juices without tempering with its texture.
Their garlic butter rice was fragrant and flavourful. Break your poached egg and mix it in with your rice for ultimate satisfaction.
The Angus Beef Rice Bowl (S$7.90) was a treat. Similar to the chicken, the Angus beef was remarkably tender. The meat was cooked to a nice pink medium and the beef itself went surprisingly well with the rest of the ingredients in the bowl.
The best part of the rice bowls? The extremely flavourful garlic butter rice that we simply couldn’t get enough of. For such an affordable price tag, this is worth every single penny.
